Dioscorea Elephantipes, it is one of our favorite plants. I first stumbled upon this species a few months ago, and was immediately intrigued by it! Doesn’t it look like a turtle? Of course, I had to get it, and a few days later I came home with a huge one that was over 50 years old!
This plant grows extremely slowly; the one in this picture is approximately 20-30 years old.
Since it is a caudex, it is a very easy plant to take care of; just give it a tiny bit of water once a week during the spring and summer. However, be careful during the winter, because it goes into a ‘resting phase’. Every 4 weeks is sufficient!
